Why the Amerigo Vespucci ?
Why did we choose for our mascot the ship Amerigo Vespucci?
When we first discussed the creation of a mascot for our community the subject of which IRL ship to choose as inspiration and base for our OC we had to contend with two distinct yet intertwined factors: the likelihood of a real ww2-era Italian warship becoming sooner or later a character in AL and the need to choose a ship that – at least for time period – belonged to the second world war, in keeping with AL’s historical period of choice. These two coordinates guided us to our final choice: the legendary Italian navy’s training ship Amerigo Vespucci. She is the perfect choice as she’s – all around the world – a symbol and ambassador of the Italian navy, mostly due to her fine craft and to her still being a sail ship in service in a modern day navy. He most distinctive feature however, her propulsion consisting exclusively of an age of sail era rigging, was also the main drawback to our choice: she couldn’t realistically fit in the battlefield of the ww2, so – in order to fix that historical discrepancy – we gave her new life as the Light Aircraft Carrier RN Amerigo Vespucci, a fictional light carrier of the Italian navy ( in game Sardegna Empire) that mirrors the real life school ship functions of the Vespucci while still making her able of taking part to ww2 era combats along with her faction mates.
